PET / rPET / APET

Polyethylene Terephthalate or PET is the most commonly used plastic. Much of our plastic packaging for cold foods is made from PET. It is strong, lightweight and shatterproof.

PET is easily recycled and can be made with recycled content (rPET).

Polypropylene is the second most commonly used plastic. It is highly versatile with a wide temperature tolerence, making it suitable for microwave heating or freezing foods.

PP is easily recycled.

Packaging made from PP can often be reused; for example Versa2Go® food containers and our reusable portion containers with hinged lids can be reused many times over.

Our Clearview Mealmaster microwavable containers (bases only) are made from a mix of polypropylene with added minerals. This results in

20 to 50% less plastic, which helps reduce landfill waste.

Unfortunately PS (polystyrene) is not commonly recycled in the UK, although some councils accept it at household waste recycling centres.

Paper packaging is often coated with a thin film of polyethylene or polypropylene, providing a moisture and grease resistant barrier.

Packaging made from this material is suitable for hot or cold foods.

PE lined paper is suitable for hot foods up to 80°C. PP lined paper withstands higher temperatures up to 120°C, making it suitable for microwave reheating.

How can I identify how to dispose of a piece of packaging?

In the UK most packaging will be embossed, printed or labelled with symbols to indicate its material and even further instructions on disposable.

Recycling is the process of converting waste into new materials and objects, ensuring useful resources aren’t totally wasted after a single use. Recyclable packaging materials include paper, cardboard, glass, metal and some types of plastics.

Glass is infinitely recyclable, and can be repurposed again and again and again. Plastic, however, can require complex sorting, processing and melting processes.

Local authorities collect recyclable packaging and send it to centres to be sorted and repurposed. Some materials are more recyclable, and therefore sustainable than others, making recycling a complex method of reducing waste.

Council waste collections vary throughout the UK. You can check //www.gov.uk/rubbish-collection-day or https://www.recyclenow.com/recycling-locator for further information about waste collections for your local area.

Home composting is a controlled, aerobic process that converts organic materials into nutrient-rich soil amendment or mulch through natural decomposition. It helps reduce food and garden waste, improves soil structure, and lowers the need for synthetic fertilizers.

Many EnviroWare® bagasse products including food boxes, tray, plates and bowls are certified by OK compost HOME.

Compostable food packaging, in combination with clear labelling and available disposal bins, can be collected with food waste and treated in an industrial compost or anaerobic digestion (AD) facility.  There are various composting facilities and collection scheme spread across the UK.
