Celebration has proudly offered PFAS-free bagasse packaging since November 2022, but why is it important to avoid these so-called “forever chemicals”?
Below, we explain what PFAS are and the serious issues they pose for people and the planet.
What Are PFAS “Forever Chemicals”?
PFAS (Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) are a group of synthetic chemicals first developed in the 1940s. They are widely used for their stain-, water-, and grease-resistant properties, and for creating non-stick surfaces. Common products containing PFAS include:
Fast food packaging (e.g., burger wraps, pizza boxes)
Dental floss and cosmetic products
Non-stick cookware
Firefighting foams
Pesticides
Paints
Stain- and water-repellent clothing
Waxes for skis, snowboards, and surfboards
Carpets and upholstery
Why Are PFAS a Problem?
PFAS are nicknamed “forever chemicals” because they do not naturally break down in the environment or the human body. Once released, they persist for a very long time—potentially forever.
Although PFAS-containing food packaging may be considered safe for direct contact with food, the issue arises when the packaging is disposed of. As it degrades, PFAS can leach into the soil and water systems, including rivers, reservoirs (drinking water), and oceans (food sources). These chemicals can also contaminate crops grown in polluted soil or compost.
Once in the environment, PFAS can enter the food chain—ultimately reaching humans through contaminated food or water. High levels of PFAS exposure have been linked to serious health concerns, including:
Increased risk of certain cancers
Hormonal disruptions and thyroid disease
Fertility issues
Weakened immune system response

Our Solution: EnviroWare® PFAS-Free Packaging
At Celebration, we’re committed to offering safer, more sustainable alternatives. Our EnviroWare® range, including bagasse hinged food boxes, trays, dinnerware, and cutlery, has undergone rigorous SGS testing, with no detectable traces of PFAS.
In addition, many of these products are certified as home compostable by the “OK Compost Home” scheme from TÜV Austria.
Home compostability significantly enhances the environmental value of EnviroWare® products. It not only reduces landfill waste but also produces nutrient-rich compost, perfect for enriching soil in gardens and green spaces.
By choosing PFAS-free, home-compostable packaging, we protect both human health and the environment—today and for generations to come.
